CHORA MONASTERY
The Monastery of Christ of Chora, which means "in the Fields", was founded in the sixth century and rebuilt several times. It played a rather modest role until the early fourteenth century, when it was lavishly restored and decorated with the now famous mosaics and frescoes. The church shown here was erected in the middle of the twelfth century. It survives in the present building, but great parts of it are now covered by a later burial chapel, two narthexes and an annex building that were added in the early 14th century.
